Small differences in diamond grading can significantly affect value.
If a diamond is offered with self-certification or a report from a lesser-known local grading body, it often means the seller is increasing their margin by using looser standards.
These certificates are not equivalent to internationally recognised reports. Always request a globally accredited certificate to ensure a fair comparison.

- Even among the top five grading organisations, there are variations in consistency.
- The GIA (Gemological Institute of America) sets the global benchmark for diamond grading.
- A diamond graded by IGI or EGL may appear similar on paper but could receive lower colour or clarity grades if reassessed by GIA.
- This means a diamond with an EGL certificate should be priced lower than an equivalent GIA-graded stone.
Laser Inscription
- Each certified diamond is assigned a unique identification number by the grading laboratory.
- Most new GIA certificates and select others feature this number laser-inscribed on the diamond’s girdle, visible under magnification.
- This ensures the diamond you purchase is exactly the one described on its certificate, providing complete transparency and peace of mind.
