Colour
For white or colourless diamonds, the industry uses an alphabetical colour scale from D to Z, with D representing the highest grade. As you move down the scale, diamonds gradually show a hint of yellow or brown.
Experts assess diamond colour by comparing each stone against a master set of reference diamonds. Without a side-by-side comparison, it can be very difficult to distinguish between grades such as D and G.
Completely colourless diamonds, such as D and E, are much rarer and therefore command a higher price. The main question when choosing a diamond is how far you can compromise on colour before the tint becomes noticeable. The right choice depends on your budget and expectations for quality.
